Zika Virus is spreading in Ecuador

After the earthquake in Ecuador in April of this year there has been a 12-fold increase in Zika infections. The situation is worse in regions that were in the center of the damage. Manabi province is where there are vast clusters of people and large amounts of residual water. These are the perfect conditions for the virus to spread. Over 500 cases of infections affected women between 15 and 49 years of age. Many pregnant women are also infected. Zika virus can be very dangerous for newborns.

What is Zika Virus?

The Zika virus causes an infection that is known as Zika fever or Zika virus disease. Its symptoms are very mild and similar to a mild form of dengue fever. There is no known way to prevent this disease with medications or vaccines. The most dangerous thing about this virus is that it can spread from a pregnant woman to her baby. The result of this can be microcephaly, severe brain malformations, and many other birth defects. That is why it is very important to prevent the infection in all possible ways.

Ecuador needs help to defeat the Zika virus

People in Ecuador need information on how to defend themselves against the Zika virus. Information and educational materials must be delivered to the Ecuadorian people. Those people who live in the areas most affected by the earthquake also need specific supplies, including mosquito nets, and hygiene and wellness supplies.

Children need proper amounts of food, vitamins, and microelements to stay strong and to be able to fight off the disease. Clean, safe drinking water is also a key element to keep the situation under control. Children need psychological support to deal with the upheaval of the earthquake and the stresses their families are enduring.
